The Wild and Wonderful State turns 155!

In honor of West Virginia’s birthday, we came up with a list of the top five ways you can celebrate the West Virginia way. Photo Credit: Marissa Bennett

1. Hiking Trails

West Virginia offers some of the most beautiful landscapes found in the United States. Get Outdoors and take advantage of the beauty out your back door! Go hiking on a few of the many beautiful hiking trails throughout the state. Some suggestions would be Dolly Sods Wilderness, Cranberry Glades, or North Fork Mountain.

2. Eat a pepperoni roll

This is a given. Pepperoni rolls originated in Fairmont, WV in 1927. The Country Club Bakery made them as a lunch option for coal miners. Pepperoni rolls make the perfect snack for any WV occasion a are a great way to celebrate West Virginia’s birthday.

Any state park in WV can be visited year-round. Our parks have something for everyone. Whether you want an affordable family vacation, extreme outdoor adventure, or a getaway for two. Pick a state park and start driving!

We suggest visiting Cass Scenic Railroad and Cathedral State Park.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park will take you back in time to when steam-driven locomotives were a crucial part of everyday life. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can learn about the rich history, visit the restaurant and museum, and take amazing photos of beautiful views & sights.

4. Go to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

Used as a sanctuary to treat the mentally ill beginning in the mid-1800’s, this asylum is presently known for ghost tours, unexplainable voices and sound and paranormal activity. West Virginian’s can tour this nationally recognized landmark during the day, and the night if you are brave. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum also hosts many events throughout the year, the most popular event is during October when they host a haunted house inside and outside of the asylum.

5. Drink a Beer from a Local BreweryPhoto Credit: Marissa Bennett

Relax, sit down, and sip on some craft beer at a local brewery. West Virginia has many unique breweries located around the state. Any brewery in the state is a great place to visit, but some favorites in our office are Mountain State Brewing Co. in Davis, Short Story Brewing in Rivesville, and Big Timber Brewing Company in Elkins.
