Basement Systems of West Virginia recommends that homeowners have their homes tested for radon during National Radon Action Month in January. Inexpensive test kits found at most home improvement stores can tell people if they have elevated levels of radon in their home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
Clarksburg, WV - December 31, 2015
Basement Systems of West Virginia would like to encourage homeowners to test their homes for radon during National Radon Action Month in January.
“The only way to tell if radon is present is to have your home tested,” said Ricki Edwardson, President of Basement Systems of West Virginia and its subsidiary, Radon Systems of West Virginia. “Inexpensive do-it-yourself kits are available at home improvement and hardware stores, and a number of licensed companies throughout the state also offer testing services.”
Edwardson explained that radon is found in every area of the Mountain State, in varying levels. She said that radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible, odorless and tasteless gas that builds up as uranium and other soil particles decay. Homes with elevated levels can have their radon issues mitigated with well-established venting techniques, she explained.
“While cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers,” she said. “The average person isn't overly concerned about radon, but this naturally-occurring gas actually kills almost as many people as leukemia each year. People should have their homes tested, as elevated radon levels have been found in every area of West Virginia.”
